My First Trip to Egypt

I went to Egypt and it was a really BIG experience. I was the first kid to dance at Raqia’s Festival. I was in the newspapers. My greatest experience I loved was being on the camels, because I went around the pyramids. Then I saw King Tut on a statue. His place was the best experience I’ve ever had in my whole life. And it’s weird because we travel all over the world and I remember everything in Asia, Europe and Africa. Dancing in Egypt was really hard, not for me to dance, but it was hard to get in because I was a kid. But once I danced I felt that I got more dance in my heart than I normally do because I was trying to dance the best I could.

The night before the Level III Workshop this past August I could barely sleep. Half of my brain was mulling over last minute organizational things that need to be set up before every workshop and the other half was personally excited, nervous and giddy to dive into a full week of being a student…..my favorite role to be in. What excited me was knowing not only would I be able to take a workshop with Suhaila, but that I would be with other dancers that have a similar drive, focus and desire within this art form. To have an interest in Level III and higher of Suhaila’s Format and vision, there has to be a passion that leads a dancer towards an artistic path. Not only to be a performer, but to be an artist with a personal point of view and message that is burning to come across through dance. In the level III workshop this is what Suhaila successfully milks out of each individual. For me this week was a time for me to reconnect with my artistic goals and the work that I was handed to dive into created a bridge for me to walk into the next stage of growth of my personal voice. It’s hard to explain the impact it has to be in a completely safe artistic environment where you can feel completely estranged from a practical sense of “reality” but what you’re in is an even higher place of consciousness and awareness….even more real.

I felt on the very first day light years more ready to begin this artistic journey than I did on the first Level III Workshop over 3 years ago. I was settled into my skin just a little bit more. I felt ready to honestly surrender and start to see what my potential might be. Eight years into this journey and I just now started to see where to begin, feeling that I was almost ready for my artistic childhood. Now with a strong foundation and security in my life as a whole I felt I could focus on art without feeling a fight to merely survive on this planet….now I wanted to make something out of my experiences. I don’t believe in the concept in dancing to live in a fantasy world, but during this week I could see how the desire to build something tangible through my art out of all my dreams for my creative self was starting to bubble to the surface.

During the workshop I was inspired by each woman in the room, moved to hysterics through both tears and laughter purely by the honesty of emotion. I was also drawn to Suhaila’s role in this part of the training and each day I was amazed in a new way of her instincts and fearlessness to involve herself into each woman and the process of level III. I learned so much just watching her responses and method of guidance. Then on top of that I learned from the effect she would have on each woman after they were prompted inward towards their true voice. Each day after the workshop I felt like my eyes had gotten bigger, literally, from having then propped open so wide to take in everything that was happening. After the 3rd day I even asked Suhaila if she thought my eyes looked bigger! Being in this artistic state made me feel like a vessel allowing everything around me to absorb, inspiring me without thought and filters. Each morning I would wake up inspired, ready to begin, even though in my mind there was also the sadness knowing that this week would soon end.

An artist’s life and path is so often misunderstood that it is a gift to be able to share moments with other artists when the point then becomes not about being understood in your path, the focus then switches to …okay now we are all on a part of this same path so now, what are you going to say through your art? What do you want to say as a woman? As an artist? What are your desires in life and how would you dance them? What does each movement you make mean to you? How do you express your dreams through movement? Level III is about living honestly so that your art can cause a revolution…so you can impact someone’s heart through your dance and they feel who you are the moment you take your first step, because you are wearing yourself honestly. And not only that, but Level III takes some serious physical skill…being pure in your expression and on top of that layering multiple techniques through the madness Suhaila’s Format. Level III is the beginning of each woman’s artistic path and I can’t wait to revisit the world of the level III weeklong again in February…….
