"If I'm going to do something that could be provocative or artistically
relevant, I have to be prepared to put myself in a place where I feel
unsafe, not completely in control. I have no fear of failure whatsoever,
because often out of that uncertainty something is salvaged, something
that is worthwhile comes about. There is no progress without failure.
And each failure is a lesson learned. Unnecessary failures are the ones
where an artist tries to second guess an audience's taste, and little
comes out of that situation except a kind of inward humiliation."

I
want to help…. I want to scream…. I want to do more….
I want to know more…. I want to be active and proactive….
I want to enjoy my life and live it to the fullest…. But most
of all I want to give back and appreciate each day that I am given.
Carley
came into the studio before the holidays a few years ago. She was
full of life and very excited about beginning her new experiment
(belly dance). She was a professional tap dancer and had done musical
theater for years. Now as an adult woman she wanted more for her
body and soul and it was time to now explore herself through a movement
that would give her another perspective on her body. The movements
are womanly and feminine with the power that can be found in a whisper.
This was especially important for Carley since her mother Kathie
was dying of breast cancer—learning to be proud of your breasts,
your body, your secrets, your dreams… your identity and movement
having to come together in a dance form and exercise that is so
womanly.
I
was allowed into this family as a gift during these last few months
of Kathie’s life. I shared the sadness and joys of each day
being given to Kathie and to her family and loved ones sharing this
experience. I had a hard time at first with meeting Kathie. My father
had died of a brain tumor when I was 9 years old and to see the
reminiscent effects of chemotherapy gave me a tummy ache. I felt
as if I was a child trying to be strong as I held a “normal”
conversation with her. I was left feeling guilty knowing that she
knew I was trying to be strong. She was happy and unbelievably proud
of her daughter. I looked up to her.
Kathie
was a proud mother. She herself was a performer who shared the love
of “show business” with Carley. Kathie was excited about
belly dancing and knew that this was a great future for her daughter.
Not the dance, not the performances, not the actual steps she would
be learning… but the community. The support of all the women
around her daughter. The sisterhood. Carley was getting in shape
and moving her body in ways she had never done in her life. Her
body was getting really strong and within that physical strength
Carley was feeling more powerful in her daily life. Her mother could
tell and only gave support for her daughter redefining herself.
What better gift to give your child than the acceptance of her own
body. While we all have our secrets and shame locked up on our skin…
why not pass onto the next generation that freedom we might not
posses.
Kathie was able
to see Carley belly dance one time. Our performance was at Rakkasah
2003 and not only did Kathie share the performance with us, but
was able to see the whole belly dance community come together. This
was a special time since we knew it might be her only chance to
share this dance form with us all. During the last few days of Kathie’s
life Carley danced… from her heart and to her mother who would
have wanted it like that. One month after Rakkasah Kathie passed
away. The loss was huge for us all and the only support I could
give Carley was not only my friendship… but the movement.
When she was lonely, we danced. When she was hiding under the covers,
we danced. When she was crying, we danced. The movement gave Carley
the strength to move on.
So
now with this Breast Cancer awareness month I give back to a community
that gave me Carley and Kathie. While I have been scared by a lump
in my own breast, I was lucky that it was only a cyst. But it reminded
me that we must never think that a tragedy can not happen to us.
Because I want to be active and positive through movement and dance,
my dance school collaborated with a friend of Carley’s family.
Justin, who is a dance teacher, to offer a workshop and donate the
proceeds to the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk, which will take place
on October 15-17 in San Francisco. Justin and Carley will be walking
in memory of Kathie, and each of us who danced together will be
walking along side of them.
So
as a community we came together to celebrate the life of Kathie,
and the future of Carley and our love for her family. We danced,
we laughed, we sweated our butts off, and we dedicated our time
through our bodies for this month of awareness. So it doesn’t
matter if you produced a workshop, took the workshop, or plan to
walk or sponsor someone in the walk…. We came to together
as a community and held hands. This is exactly why I used to dream
of having a studio—to create energy for more than just myself
on a stage in a night club with my false eye lashes on. I feel lucky
to have this community of amazing people and they give back to me
each day. THANK YOU!

From
the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation:
It's an incredibly special event. Thousands of women and men will
unite for three days and walk 60 miles in a bold display of courage
and commitment. It's a weekend of hope, as we honor lives lost,
celebrate survivors, promote breast cancer research, and help bring
breast cancer care to those who so desperately need it. Every year
in the United States, breast cancer claims nearly 40,000 lives.
Who
has been affected in your life? A mother, father, sister, daughter,
friend? The Breast Cancer 3-Day is your chance to go the distance
in the fight against this disease.
Net
proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3-Days benefit the Susan G. Komen
Breast Cancer Foundation to fund breast cancer research, education,
screening and treatment programs, as well as the National Philanthropic
Trust Breast Cancer Fund, to provide a permanent endowment for breast
cancer initiatives.
