I ended up at Raphael’s Café next to my studio after spending 2 hours working on a new drum solo choreography.  I am a regular at this cafe (my favorite being the tuna sandwich).  I stood at the counter waiting for Mary to take my order. Today I was only interested in a cup of tea, but I would have sat down if I had time.  The tables were full and Mary was working so hard to please everyone that my patience was very high.  I couldn’t help find Mary interesting to watch move.  The way she smiled at everyone, pat everyone on the shoulder, and took the time to listen to each and every personal story that was told.  She actually cared and looked alive and excited to be helping all of us.  She was very fair to who came first in the line up of needs, and I was the last one into the cafe so I had to wait the longest.  I didn’t mind since at this point I didn’t even care about my cup of tea, and watching her became much more important.  She moved slowly and at times I was worried she would drop the coffee or water.  Each time the plate of food made it to a table I was relieved that she could carry it.  Every step she took was a gift and I was happy just watching how alive and valuable Mary felt.

Mary is 87 years old and a coffee shop employee.  I had known her for the past 5 years, but today I noticed her grace and posturing.  I saw how much the role she had in this coffee shop meant to her and that it kept her feeling alive and like she had a place in the world.  The entire restaurant was patient and didn’t mind that the food might take time to receive.  We were all just happy that we had taken a moment in this day to allow time to stop and for us all to come together as a community and appreciate what this 78 year old woman could contribute to our day.

When she could finally came to take my order I really just wanted to sit at the counter and watch her all day.  Somehow her spunky attitude gave me the ability to prioritize what is important in life.  We move so fast in our culture today and not only do we not have time to enjoy the process, but we are obsessed with youth and what ever we can do to prolong the inevitable journey of life…. Age.  I think that denying the elder is also our way of being in denial that we will someday age as well.  Everyone in the café was happy to be a part of Mary’s day and her ability to shine in the fact that she was productive and helpful and a part of a community.  The restaurant shared smiles at each other as we all held the silent understanding that her speed and accuracy were not what was important, but her spirit.

When I finally got my tea I didn’t want to leave the restaurant.  I felt happy and the desire to slow down for a moment in my day and not be in such a hurry.  But when I got to the studio my mother was waiting for me.  My mother pulled out a new pair of finger cymbals that she had purchased and insisted on playing a new pattern she had just created.  I could feel her enthusiasm and joy for what she was about to share with me.  She didn’t know I was late for a doctor’s appointment or that I had along list of errands to run.  Not only was I interested in what she had to share with me, but I was very aware of her joy in feeling that I was excited to see her accomplishments.  The room went silent and even as she player her cymbal pattern I couldn’t help but hear nothing in my head but my own voice telling me to remember this moment.  How lucky I am to still have my mother with me and to share in our love for my daughter and this dance together.

When she was done I had to act impressed.  I loved her so much in this moment and asked her to play the pattern again so this time I could really listen and not just try and capture a moment for my memory box in my head.  She was all too happy to play it again and felt even more juiced that I approved.  When she was done I asked her to teach it to me and for a moment she didn’t know what to say.  I didn’t really need her to teach me since I knew exactly what she was playing.  My mother’s cymbal patterns and thought process of creating a pattern is such a part of my chemical make up that I felt it inside me as she played the cymbal pattern.  But I wanted to enjoy this moment a little longer.  So we shared in the learning process together and her eyes sparkled at the thought of showing her class this pattern on Saturday.

As we got ready to leave the studio she said that she hoped that she didn’t bother me knowing how busy I am.  I smiled and said that her cymbal pattern was the highlight of my day.  I didn’t even mention the fact that I was late for my doctor’s appointment.  The happiness I felt in my heart and saw in my mothers face was better than any doctor’s appointment or medicine anyone could prescribe.  My mother is my role model of life’s process and to be able to give back to her at this point in my life is both an easy task and the least I can do.  My mother never lied about her age, never minded getting old, and still teaches to this day.  She comes to the studio every day and will more than likely sit and watch every class (children through the adult classes). She loves the music, the people and the creation of movement.  The students love my mother and their surrogate grandmother.  She has watched and been a part of many celebrations and also been a huge support and has words of wisdom for the more sad times in life.  I can’t even imagine what she would do without the studio and the people that come to it each day and I can’t imagine what they would do without her.

This year my mother will turn 80 and I celebrate not only the birthday and that fact that she lived this long, but what she gives to me and gives to so many each day.  No matter what age I believe that we all have so much to learn from each other.  In my studio I made sure to create all the different phases of the moon for each woman to remember and look forward to each process.  To see the young women appreciate my mother and to have my mother and more mature students validate the more youthful woman in the studio makes everyone feel understood, appreciated and respected.  This is something I have actually had to work on as a part of my business plan since it is not a given that our culture today will acknowledge this process.

When I was in my teenage years my mother always told me “work on yourself from the inside because no matter what age you are there will be somebody younger and prettier… and that is the beauty of life and should not be looked at as a loss”.

Attending this Workshop has been an inspiring life changing experience. Suhaila is a warm-hearted woman whose passion is the dance, and has become my inspiration. Through this experience, she has helped me internalize every moment, and has taken me to a new level of the dance. She and her staff are down to earth, and you can tell they all love their work. I can’t wait to take another workshop to further my dance knowledge and have a great time and meet new friends, who all share the same love. -Roselee Kislowski Bristow, VA
