Welcome to Suhaila Unveiled, the official e-newsletter for Suhaila Salimpour, the Suhaila Salimpour School of Dance, and Suhaila Productions.

Greetings!

With the Solo Show behind us and going through postpartum after being able to work with such a wonderful band always brings me back to my decade of working in live Arabic night clubs six nights a week.  I am just so happy to be able to bring to the dance community the highest level of music and improvisation, which is the heart and soul of this dance.  The night was magical and I thank all of you who came to this event with such love and support.

The anticipation of Rakkasah has been keeping me up at night.  I feel that each year around this time marks the beginning of my work and accomplishments for the year to come.  The studio is full of hard work and sweat, my dreams are swirling in my head of choreography and costuming, and the music is in a mad rush for post production and mastering.  Not to mention that any new product that we want to release for each year is in a deadline for the magical weekend of Rakkasah.  Most of all our videos will be released onto DVD, three new albums, and new colors for our “Suhaila Designs” line as well as our “Hippeze” creations are all in it’s final stages of completion.  We will also have “Suhaila Solo” and “Sheherezade” on DVD at Rakkasah for sale for the first year.

So to say that we are busy is an understatement.  To say that we love what we do and try with each product, production, and performance to uphold your trust and loyalty in my vision in this art form is a promise.

Editorial by Suhaila®

Andre casually handed me an unmarked mini DV and asked, “Do you know what this is”?  I looked at it trying to use my super powers of ESP and figure out what was on the tape, but just couldn’t.  Andre had been trying to categorize all our tapes for days and with our new editing system we had tapes everywhere.  Our office has now the addition of the editing room and we have literally pulled out every tape we own.  This tape was unmarked as was a little pile that had been started.  After trying to figure out what could possibly be on the tape Andre thought we should just watch it.  We never have time to just do anything leisurely, but at this particular time it seemed like a good idea.  Maybe just looking at the first minute would remind me what the rest of the tape had on it.  So we popped it in the deck.

The screen went from that blue color to an old projector look.  The words were out of focus and I could hardly see the writing.  The camera tried to get into focus and the focusing of the words actually looked like a part of the film.  As the words came into focus I got chills.  It was a documentary about my mother, her school, and Bal Anat done back in 1974.  Not only did I remember this film, but also it was the only film or footage I have of me dancing as a child.  With all the performances I did with Bal Anat from the age of three, I only had this one piece of footage that I know of.

The movie started with a voice over of my mother in class teaching finger cymbals.  The room was full of faces I remember well such as Aida, John Compton, Europa, Anastasia Chulos, Mish Mish, Rababa, Katarina Burda, and many more.  It was like I was watching an old family movie.  I couldn’t believe the footage and the look was so 70’s.  The lighting and film equipment was probably so state of the art at the time, and now I felt like I was watching old movies.  The voice over was about the history of the dance and the history of finger cymbals.  As the room was full of women from the 70’s (with all the great hair and hippie belly dance outfits) I was taken back to a time when the dance form was young.  I totally remembered all the faces in each shot too. I couldn’t place them, but I knew their faces.  I kept thinking that all the old Suhaila Dance Company video would serve as family movies for Isabella someday.

Attending this Workshop has been an inspiring life changing experience. Suhaila is a warm-hearted woman whose passion is the dance, and has become my inspiration. Through this experience, she has helped me internalize every moment, and has taken me to a new level of the dance. She and her staff are down to earth, and you can tell they all love their work. I can’t wait to take another workshop to further my dance knowledge and have a great time and meet new friends, who all share the same love. -Roselee Kislowski Bristow, VA

In the Beginning

Tiffany Bisconer by Tiffany Bisconer

The revival debut of Bal Anat in 2001 was one of the most memorable performances.  Not just for the show value, but in the motivation with which it was created.  The night was just beginning and already all the dancers were holding back excitement and tears.  Broadway Studios was empty except for the cast and crew, and the backstage circus had already begun.  After months of preparation all the dancers were littered around the theatre in a variety of warm up stretches.  The contortionists definitely took the hat on wrapping up in the most unusual positions.  It was madness and we were all anticipating the show, even though the most important parts had already begun.  Through the process of preparing the performance the members of Bal Anat created a bond that showed through in our interactions on and off stage.  Everyone took a part of making their Bal Anat costumes and developed a closeness to the whole group, especially to the members of their specific dance, the members of their tribe.  As I looked over the explosion of colors and giddiness to get a head count for the show, all the dancers were draped in chunky tribal jewelry and adorned with tattoos and headdresses.  The musicians were warming up the sound barriers with tangents of blaring mizmars, and I could feel the pre-show excitement building.  Then, the front of house ran to the back and let us know that, an hour before doors were suppose to open, there was a line around the block with people wanting to get inside.  Since the show sold out we were feeling the heat of people wanting to come inside….now.  Just that took the backstage excitement up a notch.

In recreating Bal Anat, all the logistics that encompassed that goal included reviving the dancers choreographies, making all the costumes true to the origins of each dance, setting the tattoos to be true to the region of each tribe, making the music and setting a structure with the Bal Anat musicians and most importantly establishing a bond within the entirely new Bal Anat family.  Not only was Suhaila taking hold of her birthright to be the next generation of Salimpours to carry on the tradition of American Tribal originated by her mother, but now Isabella could be raised in part in the same environment as Suhaila was under her mother’s artistic vision.   From Suhaila this night was in part a presentation to the entire dance community that they not forget their own roots, which were hers as well, and in part this night was a huge gift to her mother and Isabella.  Suhaila was now recreating her lineage to pass it down to the next generation in its true form.  This night was a moment in history and because of the closeness between the three generations, Jamila, Suhaila and Isabella, it became a very touching night for all that were involved.  Everyone in Bal Anat seemed happy and confident and knew that they were there for a greater purpose……to pass on the word as the next generation of Bal Anat.
