We got out of our car and I knew something big was about to happen.  Andre had kept my “birthday night” a secret,  knowing it was my big “40” would make him go all out.  He never spares any expense to make me happy and this year would mark a memorable one.  It was just the two of us on a “date night” which is always special and rare so I was very excited.  As I turned around and looked up at the marquee I froze.  It was too good to be true…..  Prince was here?  No way… the man that is rarely seen these days, let alone barely has a name to pronounce as well.  Maybe it was a new Cirque De Soliel show using his symbol of both feminine and masculine  but it just couldn’t be “the PRINCE”, my idol.

We walked into the Rio hotel,  not only was it him playing with his new band, but he also has his own club and restaurant in the hotel as well.  Las Vegas is amazing and I have never seen such both grand and intimate performances done on such a high scale in my life.  We first went to the club and secured getting the best seats the old  Italian Vegas way  (tipping the Maitre D’) and we were assured the best seat in the house.  The club  held less than 1000 people and only a few tables were placed around the edge of the club.

Andre made sure I would be able to see his sweat.

The restaurant was amazing. The menu was designed by Prince and his personal chef who made sure the meal was multicultural and eclectic.  The lighting was  fantastic which, of course I noticed after all of my years of being photographed and filmed.  Even the napkins looked sexy.  No one needed blush in this place and the bathroom made you look even better.

After an incredible meal, we headed to the club section.  We sat at our table and drank Champagne as the crowd started to pour in.  It was mostly standing room and the dedicated audience didn’t mind standing for hours waiting for his royal “P” ness.  They don’t have a show time since it is really depends on when Prince is in the mood to come out and perform that starts the show.  Huge T.V. Monitors were lined around the club. They were  playing a montage of old Indian films both Bollywood style and old fashion style.  Most of the dance and love scenes were cut with clips of all his old films and rock videos.  A different sound track was played and it wasn’t until the lights went out that the crowd went crazy.

It was a mixed audience.  Every decade was represented as well as every clothing style.  I couldn’t tell if people were trying to dress 80’s or they just never changed the way they dressed from the last time they saw Prince.

Before Prince came out they played a clip of a live performance he had just done early last year.  It was amazing to see the crowd’s reaction to this clip since he still had not come out yet and the audience was responding to him like he was live.  I wish I could do that with my show… just put up a screen of me performing and have the audience go wild without even having to dance.  The build up in the audience was crazy and I couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear.  The last time I saw Prince live was over 2 decades ago and I felt my life flash in front of my eyes.

The club went black and the band began to play as the audiences’ attention shifted to the stage as the curtain came up.  The stage was set like an old jazz club complete with winding stair case and “exit” signs with doors on either side and on the back wall as well.  Prince was not on stage and from a distance I saw a door open with an “exit” sign over it.  A profiled shadow of a man waiting to enter the stage stood still and I knew it was him.  I wondered what was going through his head.  I didn’t take my eyes off of him and his focus.  As he moved to the stage my eyes widened, I looked at Andre and grabbed his hand.  This was the best birthday gift I could imagine and he knew he scored major points for this one.  I was placed at the edge of the stage and I sat very straight up in my chair and felt the entire band and his voice run through my heart.  I was in heaven.

Then the moment came and he sang it.  He sang “Purple Rain”.  Tears ran down my face as I sang every word with him.  For me this song didn’t just represent a decade of my life, or a generation, or a good summer before junior year of High School, it represented my whole format, my school, my dreams, and my passion.  And now I was looking back at the last 24 years of my life and hearing the song that I associate with my own growth.  I was truly on “this is your life” and I didn’t want this moment to end.  I didn’t take my eyes off the stage but reached backwards to hold Andre’s hand.  I was not alone in my accomplishments and the man that brought me to this concert also brought me to my current accomplishment.  What a great moment to share with him.

After the concert we ran back to the restaurant for a nightcap.  Earlier in the evening we were tipped off by our waiter that sometimes Prince comes to the restaurant after his show and has dinner.  If he feels like it will jam a set or two with his friends.  Sure enough Prince showed up and with a hand reach away I was able to see Prince improvise on his guitar and play for two more hours.  We left the Rio hotel at 5am (which for a mom is just when I’m waking up), and I had truly had the best birthday of my life.

People ask me all the time “What was your inspiration for your format” and I always reply PRINCE AND PURPLE RAIN.  To say that the album Purple Rain inspired me would be an understatement.  I ran home each day and dropped to the floor of my home studio (the converted dining room) to sit in the straddle position and squeeze my glute to both sides of this album. I only took a break to flip the LP to side B.  Of course each day was ended with Prince giving it his best in the theme song of the album “Purple Rain” in which I would try my hardest to vibrate.

My format was created on pure instinct.  Sure I had some help with my DNA, but what I was creating I had never seen (really in any dance form) and I  knew in my heart that how I wanted my body to move could be achieved if I would work hard each day on my muscle development and my glute squeezes.  Why, I’m not sure, but it all seemed to make sense while listening to Prince.  I felt so inspired by his accomplishments and the work he had done playing all instruments on his first albums.  I too felt that I was playing all instruments with my body.  I felt hope and dedication to my goals with his voice and I didn’t miss a day of playing that album.

At the end of the concert Andre said it was the best concert he had ever been to, not only for the artistry, but the production value, environment, and the fantastic sound system.  For me it was the best way to spend the ending of one decade and the beginning of another.  Being with both my husband and Prince, the two men that helped bring me to where I am today, I lacked only my mother and her homemade pasta sauce, to make my circle complete.

Attending this Workshop has been an inspiring life changing experience. Suhaila is a warm-hearted woman whose passion is the dance, and has become my inspiration. Through this experience, she has helped me internalize every moment, and has taken me to a new level of the dance. She and her staff are down to earth, and you can tell they all love their work. I can’t wait to take another workshop to further my dance knowledge and have a great time and meet new friends, who all share the same love.
