Having to go back to Europe was a bit difficult on the jet lag situation. I think that we will try and organize more of a flow to our travels next year for our European Tour. We were exhausted and totally worn out, but the second we landed we did not waste any time and hit the Chanse A Le Lesai. It was my fifth trip to Paris but going with Andre and Isabella gave it a totally different perspective. Even going to the places I had been to before was so moving to share them with “Mini Moi” (as the French called Isabella). We had a week in Paris and it felt too little already.
Andre fell in love with the city and with no time to spare I began my hints to have a little flat in the city of Paris. I love the city and the long days (it was light until 10pm) I felt like I just went from shop to shop and café to café which is my dream life (other than teaching and dancing of course). We had also promised Isabella a pair of shoes from Paris. She was so patient the entire trip, but now it was a daily nagging ritual to get her grown up shoes in Paris (for dress up of course).
The Eiffel tour, Arch de Triump, Louve (which I got Isabella to agree to go to only because they filmed the Davinci Code movie there), and the Bautax Mouche boat ride were laced with great food, and great shopping. The cappuccinos and chocolate croissants were incredible and each night was not complete without a trip to the gelato or crepe street vendor. It was a good thing I was going to teach soon.
The workshop sponsor was Amana (along with her husband Francois). They have their own studio (that the workshop was held in) and it reminded me of home. Amana and her husband were very gracious, professional, and truly motivated to raise the level of the art. I was excited to begin the workshop and hoped that the students would understand me. Not only was I happily surprised at the response to my format, but I was also surprised at how many questions people had regarding belly dance in America. The dancers in Europe truly appreciate art and culture and for this they are open and excited to share in knowledge. It was very charming to have them ask questions regarding my mother (Jamila Salimpour) and tribal, since they are so new to the innovative ways of the West.
These dancers did 4 hours straight with me and at the end they were still standing. They don’t want a break since they felt that their muscles would get too cold and if they ate too much  it will be too difficult to return to the training. I loved it and with each hour I loved watching them sweat along with me. For this class it was different for them since they were use to choreography and more stylization. I was scheduled to teach choreography the last day, but was asked to just keep going with my technique. I was so pleased with this response since it was my first time teaching in Paris (and Europe) and so I really wanted the students to grasp my format and take it with them. It was three days of “me” and I must admit that it was hard to leave. The studio that Amana is creating for the community is very supportive and geared towards someone who really wants to learn to dance and I loved working with these dancers. Amana took the whole workshop and was totally driven each day to absorb the technique. Being a sponsor is a lot of work and to be able to organize as well as she did allowing herself the time to participate in the workshop was only a testament to her wonderful producing abilities. She is a trained ballet dancer and for this felt drawn to the technique even more. Once again I was asked to come back next year but this time for more days. The friendship with Amana and her husband that was built was truly joyful. We look forward to our return in June of 07. Yahoo… more shopping!
To be able to put into words my feelings of going back to Egypt after a decade is very difficult. I felt removed and saddened by this response to not being in the Middle East for so long. I spent 10 years going back and forth to the Middle East to perform in my 20’s, and now turning 40 this year I was going back to teach and bring the knowledge and information that I had acquired. Why was I scared? I have thought about this many times and in my heart I knew that I was missing something inside my soul by being gone for so long. I miss the live music with amazing musicians. I miss the food. I miss the smells. I miss the people and kind smiles. I missed the passion that I felt for the dance while feeling surrounded by the music and culture. But the bottom line was that I missed all this that lived inside me that felt asleep because of not allowing myself to return for so many years. I know that I am an American dancer, but the blood that runs through my veins is Middle Eastern and the spiritual pull that it can do on my soul can get really strong. I was face to face with all that I loved and hated about myself…. ready to experience it all again, but this time as a wife, mother, director, creator, and instructor. I was bringing all my accomplishments to share in hopes I could show all I had now to offer to the art form. I guess I felt that I left home to make my own life so I could come back and show all that I had accomplished. I hoped “they” would be proud. Let us see…. Now off to Egypt!
