Because the opportunity to experience live Middle Eastern music doesn’t come around often, I was looking forward to the night of Suhaila’s Solo show from the moment the date was set. During her Solo Show 3 years prior I sat front row center and wept through happiness and torment for nearly 2 hours straight. The live music seeped into me like nothing else and watching Suhaila embody both the sentiment and instrumentation with so much power, softness and beauty affected me so much. Even now when I watch the Suhaila Solo DVD I feel the same way and I swear I can hear myself gasping through tears between all the musical breaks! What stuck with me that night was how I felt when I left the theatre, I felt exhausted and blissful. Because of the grandness of the music and the vulnerability and strength of Suhaila’s emotional and technical capacity through the dance, I was taken on an emotional journey and I left with a piece of myself feeling renewed. Remembering this experience left me anxious for the next opportunity to be taken away by another evening of live Arabic music and dance.
Then, Suhaila told me that she was going to have me dance in her Solo Show. I think my face turned bright red and I felt a knot form in my stomach. In one moment I felt excited, deeply honored and scared because I didn’t feel ready. I think Suhaila saw my shock and told me we would meet so she could help me prepare what approach I was going to take with my opening. I was so nervous and trying hard to act calm so I didn’t worry her. Until the day of the show I would just put on a version of my opening music and dance until I lost all thought and just felt my body move. I wanted so much to make Suhaila proud. I wanted to do the best I could do so I felt proud of myself for at least giving all I had to give at this moment. I felt vulnerable knowing I was going to be improvising my whole set, but I felt extremely lucky to have been given this opportunity to experience the live music through my own body and to share the moment with Suhaila as well as with Isabella, Rashid and Margaret Cho.
The night of the performance for me was filled with all of the technical and production set up details until 1 hour before when I was plopped into the make up chair. I was so nervous that I got uncontrollable hiccups and was trying to get myself under control before I got eyelash glue in my eye. I was trying to take everything in so I could absorb this night into my memory. As the time got closer we all made our way to the side of the stage. As the band started to play my excitement grew and everything that had occupied my mind earlier in the day melted away. I looked at Suhaila and felt in my heart this gift of dance she has given me. As I danced I felt as if I was no where else except for in this moment. The music led my body around the stage and my ears were consumed, blocking out all other sound. For me this was a moment of a lifetime.
As soon as I came back into reality after I slipped back into the wings of the stage, I rushed out to slide into my seat in the audience to disappear into the story that would be told on the stage. Watching Suhaila dance and feeling the energy coming from the music was as exhilarating from my seat in the theatre as it was dancing in the middle of the stage. As the night floated by, I started to feel heavy hearted because I didn’t want this moment to end and I didn’t know when I would get this experience again.
As Suhaila finished her set my tears that were beginning to compose themselves spilled out in full as Isabella made her entrance onto the stage. Every time I see her dance, life gets put into perspective. Seeing through her movements and innocence to the root of why we dance makes me feel that every step of this journey in life is a story that bleeds into our essence when we dance. Through this night I left with another story to carry with me when I dance and an experience that will live inside of me as a gift and inspiration.
